THINKING ABOUT YOUR SITE

If you already sell locally or internationally via mail-order, the web can bring more customers your way.
(Credit card sales can easily be enabled through either your current Merchant Account, or via web-only systems run by all the major banks, using their 'SSL' secure payment sites.)
WHAT DO YOU NEED?
A 'web-site' consists of pages of information held on a 'server' computer for access by the world.
You can put a site on the web for free these days, but you will have to design it yourself, compromise on the name ('yourCompany@someoneElse'sName.com'), and much else besides.

A successful site combines good design with clear navigation around it, and is a source of up-to-date, useful information. The design you see on the screen must be reinforced with good coding in the background - here lies the skill in bringing a site to or near the top of search lists, the Holy Grail for all websites.
GETTING STARTED
A Home Page informs the world what the site contains, and it then links directly with other areas - 'pages' - which deal more specifically with discrete aspects of your business.
In reality any page can link directly with any other, though there should be a clear sense of direction, or hierarchy, throughout the site. Good design starts like this, on a piece of paper, believe it or not! Many pieces, perhaps. In this way you build up a feel for what needs to be on your site.
You can have a 'Search' facility allowing visitors to find items or information just as they do in Google etc: see example below.

Regular visitors will know what they wish to see, and where to find it; but many potential visitors will have searched, using keywords or phrases, in a search engine, such as Yahoo or Google. From here they might arrive in the middle of your site - your home page did not contain the criteria they used, but an inside page probably did: this is a key difference to reading a brochure or book, and clearly understanding it allows you to fully exploit the quite unique benefits of the web. It is also, by the way, the reason every page carries (or should carry) general Site Information and Home Page links.
Here are some thoughts to help us both, before you contact me.
- Search the web yourself, using words and phrases people might use to find your site - in this way competitors, and related sites, can be found.
- Write down a short list of 'keywords' that you want to use to describe the site - single words or simple phrases that potential visitors might use to find you. These can include personal and locality names as well as objects or services supplied.
- Write a short description - no more than thirty words - to be displayed by search engines displaying links to your site.
A PROPOSAL
Should you wish to engage my services, we will have an initial meeting - no more than half an hour - during which you can explain what you need. No charge.
If we are to proceed I will suggest approaches, and agree a charging basis: by unit time or for specific results. When the site is delivered, an annual maintenance fee can be negotiated - based on time and need - as appropriate.
A basic site is outlined below:
- It consists of up to five pages, plus a flash intro page. Good design suggests each 'page' should be no more than two to three screen heights, unless there are specific demands to the contrary.
- Up to six graphic elements (pictures, logos etc) can be included, and permission must be granted from all copyright owners.
- The pages will be fully interlinked, and there will be a direct email link to the site owner, together with up to five outside links, as necessary.
The above site, assuming artwork/images are scanned or delivered ready to scan, will cost UK £400.00/US $700. Half to be paid in advance, the balance on acceptance of site.
- This will be delivered on disk.
- A short tutorial on uploading and simple maintenance can also be arranged - charged at £25.00 for up to one hour.
- The site will be delivered as soon as practicable, no less than fourteen days from delivery of suitable graphics and text.
- The above is an example only, and I will be happy to discuss sites both smaller and larger - in fact whatever you need.

Your site will be hosted on Linux servers based in a state-of-the-art Server Facility based either here in the UK or in the United States.
Scripts, SQL and e-Commerce are all available - there is nothing currently available to the independent website operator that is faster, more reliable, or offers such scalability.

Hosting (automatic domain renewal included), and a Personal Control Panel allowing complete control of email and ftp, including the setting of all passwords and access privileges.
You assume responsibility for the day-to-day running of your site: uploading pages, accessing and configuring email POP boxes, aliases and autoresponders etc. Pixel Images will provide all initial settings and ensure they are working.
Please be sure you are happy setting these systems yourself before choosing this option!

US Domains: £10.00 when paid by Direct Debit

will configure your ftp & email (up to five POP boxes), forwarding and aliases/autoresponders. Also, you will be entitled to up to one hour's time to update pages/submit to search engines/etc., per month.
This represents an excellent deal - if you are unsure how to configure your computer/email, or want occasional updates done at no further cost, this is for you!

US Domains: £22.50 when paid by Direct Debit
Maintenance and updating work can be undertaken, chargeable at an hourly rate of UK £25.00 (US $40.00).
Keeping your site current, and adding fresh content regularly, is essential in building up a worthwhile user base - surely one of the main aims of any business.
As the client, you will monitor and handle email generated by the site on an ongoing basis, as part of normal business procedures.
YOU NEED (on your computer):
- An FTP programme if you wish to manage the account yourself, though you can publish using most main browsers - try Cute FTP or WS_FTP, available on many magazine cover discs.
